Leaks All But Confirm 32GB iPhone

A surprise it isn’t, but it’s nice to know that at the very least the iPhone is about to get a storage boost, doubling its internal flash memory to 32GB. Up until the euthanization of the 160GB iPod Classic, Apple could always be relied upon to increase drive size in iPods.

The rumors/leaks come from two independent sources, and both are the results of either incompetent slip-ups or a genius-level marketing strategy. First, T-Mobile Austria posted a placeholder on its site listing a “iPhone 32GB” starting at €0 (that’s $0, for the mathematically challenged), and the blog Area Mobile was sharp enough to grab a screen shot.

Next up, Rogers. The much “loved” Canadian carrier has posted a list of upcoming handsets according to the Boy “Genius” Report. Here’s the relevant line: “# iPhone — ETA: unknown (July/August), outright: not allowed, 3-year: TBD.” That’s right folk: three years. This doesn’t point to a 32GB model, but it at least offers some confirmation of an early Summer launch.

Finally, Vodafone Australia has issued an end-of-life notice for the 32GB iPhone. This could, of course, just means that the 16GB iPhone 3G is about to be replaced by a newer 16GB iPhone, but we agree with MacTalk.au that it looks like there will be a bigger model along soon.

And you know what else this means? The iPod Touch has always had double the capacity of the largest iPhone, which probably means a ridiculously large 64GB model is on the way.

Skype strikes deal with Nokia

On Tuesday, the company, which is owned by eBay, announced a partnership with Nokia, the largest cell phone maker in the world, to put the Skype Internet calling software onto its phones. Nokia will initially offer Skype on its high-end smartphones, the N-series. The N97, Nokia's flagship device that goes on sale in June, will be the first to have Skype embedded. The Skype feature will start shipping on the device in the third quarter of 2009.

Skype will be integrated into the N97 address book, enabling users to see when Skype contacts are online. It will also let people use Skype's instant-messaging client. Most importantly, N97 users will be able to make free and low-cost phone calls over the Internet whether they are on a 3G cellular network or a Wi-Fi network. The Skype-to-Skype voice calls are free. And the SkypeOut service, which allows calls from Skype to landlines and mobile devices, offers low rates.

Nokia's not the only handset maker to announce a deal with Skype at Mobile World Congress. On Monday, announced it would be offering a Skype "panel" on the Windows Mobile Xperia1 device.

Adding Skype to smartphones is a great benefit for consumers, especially people who travel internationally or have friends and family overseas. While pricing on domestic voice services has been dropping like a brick from a third-story window, international rates have remained high.

As a consumer who likes to travel and who happens to be traveling internationally right now for this trade show, I am annoyed and almost angered at the outrageous prices mobile operators charge when customers roam in other countries or make international calls from the U.S. They all try to sell "international" plans to help defray the cost, but the plans themselves cost consumers an extra fee every month regardless of whether they're traveling that month or not.

Skype and other VoIP services offer users a more cost-effective alternative. And Skype on a mobile phone, when accessed on a low-cost data network, could help people who travel frequently or make lots of international calls save tons of money.

Of course, the two smartphone makers Skype has announced as partners here are manufacturers that are already struggling to get their high-end devices on American mobile networks. And my guess is that adding Skype won't do much to convince these operators to offer these phones and subsidize them so that American consumers will buy them.

The reason is pretty simple. AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile USA know that a wide-scale deployment of Skype on their phones could cannibalize their international voice services and potentially hurt their domestic voice service.

So if by chance, Nokia or Sony Ericsson manages to win approval from a U.S. operator to get these phones on their networks, I wouldn't be surprised if the Skype feature is stripped from the device in the U.S. version.

That said, AT&T is allowing some voice over IP applications to appear on Apple's iPhone App Store. And Skype users are able to make free and low-cost calls through applications, such as Truphone. But for now, AT&T and Apple seem hesitant to allow Skype's powerful brand, which has more than 400 million registered users, to make it onto the iPhone.

The new iPhone OS 3.0 adds over 100 new features including—at friggin' last—cut and paste.

• Copy & Paste text. When you double-tap over text, you will get a "cut, copy, and paste" bubble dialog. Double-tap again and a "paste" bubble will appear if there's anything stored in your clipboard.

This works across applications. You can expand your selection points using your thumbs and, if you accidentally paste something you didn't want to paste, just shake your iPhone to undo it.

• Copy & Paste photos. You can also copy and paste photos. Now you will be able to select multiple photos by tapping the action button, copy some of them, and paste them in an email, ready to send.

• New Spotlight. iPhone OS 3.0 will allow you to search across the entire information contained in your device, no matter where, as soon as the information is supported it. If an application is written to support the new Spotlight, its data will also be available in the search.

In this screenshot you can see Spotlight bringing results from your address book, maps, your iPod, and apps in your springboard.

• Search in Mail, Calendar, and iPod. These Apple applications have specific search interfaces. The search in Mail doesn't support the message content yet, but it supports searching in IMAP servers—that will save a lot of time logging into Gmail.

• 3G Tethering. This feature will allow you to connect your iPhone 3G to a laptop, to use it as a modem to access the internet. Carriers still have to sign-off on it, and probably charge more for it. None have announced it yet.

• Landscape keyboard. Apple has added the landscape keyboard mode to other applications, like Mail, SMS, and Notes.

The Handphone: Possibly The Worst Cellphone Concept Ever

I always wondered just why people bother with a wired cellphone headset. You've seen them: one hand to hold the phone, one hand to cram the earpiece into their waxy canal and then the other hand to hold the microphone somewhere near the mouth. And all the while evil radiation goblins are racing up the wire, directly into the brain. Hands free? No way.

The handphone takes this madness a step further. Why have one simple, easy to use unit which can simply be held to the head when you can strap a mess of wires onto the back of your hand? Take a look at the picture. How would you dial it? And how would you do anything else while wearing it? Even the fixings are odd. Instead of a simple velcro strap (which seems good enough for both the microphone and speaker) you have two elastic straps. One to cut off the blood flow to your middle finger and one to do the same for your wrist.

The handphone is, of course, a concept design. And will remain so, forever.

BenQ E55 released in Taiwan

BenQ has recently released one if its new 3G mobile phones, the BenQ E55 clamshell. The phone sports some pretty basic features.

The E55 clamshell weighs 95 grams and, tri-band connectivity (GSM 900/1800/ 1900), a 2 inch TFT internal display with 262K colours, a 96 x 64 pixel external display, a dedicated media player (with support for MP3, AAC, MP4 and 3GP), Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, FM radio, a 2.0 megapixel camera, secondary video-call camera, SMS and MMS capabilities, WAP 2.0 browser, 45MB of internal memory and microSD card support (up to 2GB).

The retail price of BenQ E55 is 6,990 Taiwanese dollars (around RM 746), for the moment, the E55 is available only across Taiwan.

Nokia Acquires Symbian; Takes on Google's Android

Nokia isn't finished with its acquisition spree just yet. Tonight the Finnish company announced a plan to acquire the 52 per cent of Symbian it doesn't already own and make the platform open source. Nokia clearly aims to challenge Android, the open source mobile operating system of Google. Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo says that it wants to create "the most attractive platform for mobile innovation and drive the development of new and compelling web-enabled applications".

The Symbian operating system is currently the leading open platform and it powers Nokia's smartphones, as well as those of a large number of other hardware manufacturers.

All of the major stakeholders in Symbian, including Sony Ericsson, Panasonic, and Siemens, have accepted the offer, representing approximately 91% of the Symbian shares. Nokia doesn't have a definitive answer form Samsung Electronics yet, but expects them to accept the offer as well.

Nokia Prism Phone Features OLED Display

Nokia isn't just going for the gold; it's going for the diamond. Well, the diamond-cut look that is.

Today Nokia unveiled two Prism handsets, a 7500 and 7900 model, that feature diamond-cut design, sharp angled lines, geometric patterns, and "graphic light-refracting color". Both models feature 2-megapixel cameras and a music player. One model, the 7900, features a very cool 16 million color OLED display.

The beefier of the two models, the 7900, also sports a nifty "living wallpaper" feature that changes the screen's background colors of the handset depending on the time and battery life and signal strength. You can also choose from 49 colors for the light that radiates from underneath keys.

The 7900 features dual band 3G technology and quad-band GSM capability for worldwide connectivity.

Under the hood the model 7500 is a standard GSM phone with a skimpy 512MB MicroSD card. The 7900 ships with a 1GB on board memory. The 7500 doesn't feature customizable colors, rather personalize the handset you can choose from interchangeable color accents.

Nokia says the 7500 and 7900 Prism will be available by the fall of 2007 for $290 and $550. Specific market availability has not been announced.

Nokia PC Suite 6.85 upgrade

Looks like Nokia has PC Suite version 6.85.11.1 just about ready for official release. And it has been nicely improved from the previous version.

The first thing you notice when you launch Nokia PC Suite 6.85 is the new sidebar:

The upper part of the sidebar has a nifty application that allows you to Drag&Drop any file from your PC to your Nokia phone. I tried this with pictures, mp3 and video and it worked great. Nokia PC Suite even converted the file I dropped to mp4 format readable by my Nokia N95.

N95 with 8GB

Today Nokia announced that its N95 8GB phone, first revealed in August at the Nokia:Go Play conference, would begin shipping globally.

As part of a joint marketing move with Sony, the N95 will also ship with a full-length version of Spiderman 3, a ring-tone, and games. Nokia relates the movie to the launch of its latest N95 this way: "Spiderman's suit turn[s] jet-black and [enhances] his powers in its latest incarnation," claiming that the N95 has also transformed. When your eyes are done rolling, we can continue.

As a quick refresher, the S60 Symbian OS phone features 100MB of onboard storage with up to 8GB of internal flash storage. It also has a 2.8" 240x320 resolution display, a 5 megapixel camera, 210 minute talk time, and standby up to 280 hours. The phone will also take advantage of Nokia's forthcoming N-Gage gaming platform, features TV-out functionality, 802.11b/g connectivity, and A-GPS support.

Apple's iPhone is still the best thing invented this year. Why? Read the reasons:

1. The iPhone is pretty
Most high-tech companies don't take design seriously. They treat it as an afterthought. Window-dressing. But one of Jobs' basic insights about technology is that good design is actually as important as good technology. All the cool features in the world won't do you any good unless you can figure out how to use said features, and feel smart and attractive while doing it.

2. It's touchy-feely
apple didn't invent the touchscreen. Apple didn't even reinvent it (Apple probably acquired its much hyped multitouch technology when it snapped up a company called Fingerworks in 2005). But Apple knew what to do with it.

3. It will make other phones better

jobs didn't write the code inside the iPhone. These days he doesn't dirty his fingers with 1's and 0's, if he ever really did. But he did negotiate the deal with AT&T to carry the iPhone. That's important: one reason so many cell phones are lame is that cell-phone-service providers hobble developers with lame rules about what they can and can't do.

4. It's not a phone, it's a platform
when apple made the iphone, it didn't throw together some cheap-o bare-bones firmware. It took OS X, its full-featured desktop operating system, and somehow squished it down to fit inside the iPhone's elegant glass-and-stainless-steel case. That makes the iPhone more than just a gadget. It's a genuine handheld, walk-around computer, the first device that really deserves the name.

As you all knows...Android is a new OS from Google.

Just like the good folks promised, the early look software development kit for Google's soon-to-be huge phone OS has hit the streets... er, internet. From what we can tell, the OS is as comfortable on larger, VGA devices as it is on more traditional smartphone layouts. Oh yeah... and it plays Quake. Here's an odd one for you, a Nokia patent application just revealed those images above. The odd part is not so much the slider mechanism they are attempting to patent. If we're not mistaken, that looks like "8 megapixel"stamped just below the lens.
